Marc Biro shares how lessons in discipline, trust and resilience shaped his journey from competitive sport to capital markets and enterprise modernization.
Contemporary capital markets and financial institutions function in the context of fast technological development, regulatory pressure, and new economic cycles. Legacy and disparate operational models cannot accommodate the necessary speed for modern competition anymore. Functioning in such an environment requires a unique set of leadership competencies – technical knowledge, domain expertise, and skills to unite people around a single goal.
At the core of this initiative is Marc Biro, Senior Director and Client Partner of EPAM Systems, Inc. Based on his extensive experience in Tier-1 investment banks, leading Hedgefund, and major management consultancies that spans close to three decades.
Marc regularly advises C-suite stakeholders on how to balance innovation investments, regulatory obligations, modernization priorities, and cost optimization initiatives. His ability to translate complex business and technology tradeoffs into clear investment decisions has made him a trusted advisor to executive leadership teams navigating large-scale transformation. Beyond advisory leadership, Marc has helped global financial institutions shape enterprise technology roadmaps, modernize critical business platforms, and align technology investment strategies with long-term business objectives.
Combining the discipline of top-class athlete with his knowledge of market mechanisms, he is contributing to developing a domain-driven strategy for upgrading digital infrastructure.
“Success is rarely defined by a single achievement. It is built through continuous learning, adapting to change, and having the courage to reinvent yourself when the industry evolves.”
The Water Polo Mindset: Developing Discipline, Trust, and High-Pressure Leadership
The core of Marc’s leadership philosophy was developed much earlier than when he was participating in discussions in the conference rooms of Wall Street. As an accomplished water polo athlete, he spent many years perfecting a game which requires constant communication, quick decision making, endurance and total team trust.
“Playing in the pool, I learned the importance of accountability, knowledge about everyone’s role in the team, remaining calm under pressure and leading by example,” says Marc. “As my career advanced into more and more leadership roles, I’ve found that the same principles applied to business settings too.”
Such athletic training was very helpful at the beginning of his career in Goldman Sachs, where Marc worked as a Senior Specialist in support of the Program Trading business. Working in a fast-paced environment, Marc helped design and optimize end-to-end workflows for the trading processes. Accuracy, speed and cross-functional execution on trading desks, technology, operations and compliance sides were crucial. Using lessons from competitive sports, Marc concentrated on teamwork, operational excellence and process improvement, earning recognition for Operational Excellence.
“The experience reinforced a leadership philosophy that has remained with me ever since: create clarity around the objective, empower experts to perform at their best, foster trust and accountability across the team, and remain calm and decisive when the pressure is highest,” he explains.
“Operational excellence earns credibility. Strategic thinking creates value. The leaders who master both become trusted advisors.”
The Evolution of an Operator: From Capital Markets Operations to Strategic Consulting
Marc’s professional journey is one that has led him from executional work to more strategic advisory work. His start was in executional capital markets work at Morgan Stanley where he learned trade lifecycle management and risk control procedures. Positions at Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, and Bridgewater have taught him about complex issues in trading operations, regulatory change, and technology projects.
This has led Marc to gain firsthand experience of how financial firms operate from the inside, from both successes and lessons learned during tough projects.
“The positive moments reinforced the importance of collaboration and continuous learning,” notes Marc. “The more challenging moments taught me humility, perseverance, and the value of learning from failure instead of avoiding it.”
Navigating Career Pivots and the Transition to Client Advisory
Realizing that sustained industry influence would need to span from inside operational activities to future-oriented strategies, Marc moved on to become a consultant and client-partner at Accenture, PwC, TCS, Broadridge, and Capco. This meant adapting from an ownership of direct operations to an influence of consultancy, finding consensus between conflicting stakeholders, and turning regulatory and technical requirements into investment decisions.
“One of the most challenging professional transitions I ever made was moving from industry executive and operator to strategic advisor and client partner,” remembers Marc. “Not only did I have to influence the decision rather than own it, but instead of managing teams across one company, I had to rapidly earn trust as a new client, find consensus among disparate stakeholders, and chart a path forward.”
“The strongest teams are not built by controlling every decision. They are built by empowering talented people with clear objectives and the confidence to lead.”
Navigating the Technology Wave: Bridging Business Strategy and Engineering Excellence
During his over two decades of work in financial services, Marc has observed a radical change in the role of technology as a driver for the creation of enterprise value. With cloud computing, analytics, automation, and artificial intelligence, financial services have become complex digital ecosystems.
Whereas what makes Marc stand out as a Client Partner is that he manages to blend domain knowledge in capital markets with a continuous process of technological upskilling. He is not looking at technology as an end in itself but to resolve business issues and drive revenue generation.
“It occurred to me over time that most transformations require more than technology,” says Marc. “What they need are an understanding of business goals, the building of trusted relationships, stakeholder alignment, and guidance through the transformation process.”
His dual skill set enables Marc to talk authoritatively at all levels within an organization, from the technical aspects to business strategies and the creation of robust operating models based on good governance and measurable results.
Throughout his career, Marc has focused on helping organizations establish technology as a strategic business capability rather than a support function. Working with executive leadership teams, he has contributed to transformation initiatives involving operating model redesign, platform rationalization, cloud adoption, automation, data strategy, and AI enablement. These programs have sought not only to modernize technology estates but also to improve time-to-market, reduce operational complexity, strengthen governance, and position organizations for sustainable growth.
Redefining Transformation at EPAM: Domain-Led Solutions for Financial Services
Marc brings years of experience to EPAM Systems where he will help influence how major financial companies think about enterprise modernization today. At EPAM, strategic consulting, platform engineering, and artificial intelligence are combined into one execution model.
In order to enhance their capabilities in banking and capital markets, EPAM has expanded its domain expertise through acquisitions such as First Derivative, a capital‑markets data and consulting firm known for its KX technology and deep trading‑operations expertise, and by bringing in seasoned industry leaders, like Stéphane Ritz and Marc to strengthen its financial‑services practice.. Building on EPAM’s engineering-led foundation, the firm is evolving toward a more targeted, domain-driven approach that combines deep industry expertise with business-objective-led solutioning. This strategic focus enables stronger client partnerships, streamlined operating models, optimized workflows, and transformation initiatives that deliver measurable business outcomes.
“At EPAM, the unique combination of strategy, engineering, and execution creates business value,” notes Marc. “An engineering-first company that helps organizations modernize digital, cloud, and data platforms in order to embed AI into their processes with responsible, scalable adoption. ”
With pressure coming from three sides including aging infrastructure, regulatory change, and rising costs, Marc works with C level executives to create practical modernization strategies. He focuses on helping organizations adopt responsible AI and automation to enhance decision making while maintaining essential human oversight, ensuring that technology strengthens enterprise performance rather than replacing critical judgment.
“The most valuable transformations happen when industry expertise, business strategy, and technology innovation move together, not independently.”
Leadership Integrity, Personal Balance, and Advice for Future Advisors
Consistently maintaining high levels of performance in difficult executive positions calls for self-discipline. Maintaining the same level of focus on his personal life as he does when dealing with his clients’ accounts, Marc uses a system that involves ruthless prioritizing, empowerment, and proper governance boundaries.
“Ruthless prioritization, empowerment and coaching of the people around me, and creating decision rights among my teams is key,” notes Marc. “With highly capable individuals who know what is expected from them and have the decision-making powers, it becomes easier to minimize the bottleneck, improve the results of the clients, and use my energy in the right areas.”
“Invest in your people with the same discipline you invest in yourself. The returns compound through stronger teams, better decisions, and greater innovation.”
Physical health forms an integral part of the individual’s routine, offering him mental clarity about his work involving his clients from across the globe. He makes sure to find time for disconnection and bonding with his family and colleagues in the industry.
For professionals who want to create meaningful careers through client relationships and consulting services, Marc suggests focusing on forging lasting bonds based on trust and not mere transactions.
“The future leaders who will be successful in the upcoming decade are those that will manage to merge their industry knowledge with the ability to know data, AI, digital transformation and future technologies,” says Marc. “Technical skills and domain knowledge will open doors to the meetings, but it is trust, flexibility and being able to help clients with preparation to the future that will forge strategic client partnerships.”
Through his work at EPAM Systems, Marc Biro continues to show that business transformations occur when you successfully merge operational, technological, and managerial perspectives on the matter.
