Joe Hubbard: Steering Transformation of Alternative Protein Production

As CEO Integrated Proteins, Joe Hubbard spearheads the company’s mission to transform alternative protein production through advanced processing technologies and strategic industry partnerships. In addition to over ten years in this sector, he has more than fifteen years of experience in agribusiness and commodities. Joe has carved out a distinctive place for himself and his company in the pet food market because of his innovative spirit and exemplary leadership style, which empowers people to excel. He is also passionate about championing sustainable agriculture and food security.

Joe holds a degree in agricultural economics and an MBA. These degrees, coupled with his experience and industry insights, have enabled him to achieve outstanding business outcomes.

Stepping Into the Food and Protein Industry

Joe grew up in rural Missouri. So, his dream was not to climb the corporate ladder or start a company, but to own horses and cattle and spend his days outdoors, surrounded by nature.

When he was pursuing a degree in agribusiness management, Joe interned at Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM), which is where his interest in the food and protein industry was first ignited. During his internship, he gained hands-on experience in trading and protein markets. “That opportunity eventually led me to broker a protein deal in South America, deepening my passion for global agriculture and commerce,” Joe says. He later worked in Dairy Farmers of America (DFA). His expertise spans R&D commercialization, supply chain optimization, and scaling sustainable solutions to meet global protein demands.

In 2019, Joe founded Integrated Proteins. From scratch, he has built it into a leading innovator in sustainable protein solutions for the food and feed industries. He has also established related companies that, along with Integrated Proteins, manufacture, source, and sell to the pet food market. Now, according to Joe, they source and sell products on five continents. They have offices in Kansas City, Missouri; São Paulo, Brazil; Dublin, and Ireland.

“We create opportunities for our customers by sourcing what they want and need, not just what is easily available,” Joe says. “We solve problems for our customers, including formulating a product to meet customer quality requirements.”

A Brief Introduction to Integrated Proteins

Integrated Proteins, an industry leader in sourcing and trading rendered proteins, specializes in creating custom ingredients that pet food manufacturers need. Until now, the company has partnered with more than 20 pet food and animal feed companies.

In its fully equipped laboratories, Integrated Proteins produces clean, consistent protein meals for pet food manufacturers. It offers more than nine monospecies of protein meals, including exotic and hard-to-find products from six continents. The company can customize proteins to fit a manufacturer’s formulation needs. NutriPure™ is its innovative method for refining meals. It takes the direct-from-renderers product, used by many manufacturers, and transforms them into clean and nutritionally consistent premium ingredients.

According to Joe, in recent years, Integrated Proteins’s increased strength and exponential growth can be attributed to these factors: quality of its products, the expertise and diversity of its team, a willingness to listen to customers, the ability to innovate to meet customer needs, and a dedication to sustainability.

The mission of Integrated Proteins is to provide pet food manufacturers with the most reliable supply of the highest-quality ingredients through disruption-resistant ingredient sourcing and value-enhancing refining and formulation. This mission guides everything that Joe and his team do.

Under Joe’s leadership, Integrated Proteins continues to drive innovation and deliver high-quality protein solutions that align with environmental stewardship and evolving consumer needs.

Dealing with the Most Unexpected Challenge

For Joe, the most unexpected challenge has been balancing rapid business growth with maintaining the company’s culture. He points out that when a company is scaling quickly, its culture tends to easily erode. He is determined not to let that happen at Integrated Proteins.

“I have learned to navigate that by putting people first,” Joe says, “whether that means investing in leadership training, improving communication, or making sure every employee feels heard.” He also makes sure that the company’s culture is at the center of every decision, which turns growth into an opportunity rather than a risk to the company’s cultural ethos.

Decisions and High-Stakes Situations

Making decisions in high-stakes situations can be challenging, especially when outcomes cannot be predicted with certainty.

“High-stakes decisions are rarely about finding a perfect answer,” Joe points out. “They are about leading with clarity in the face of uncertainty.”

He has learned to approach them by centering himself first, and then drawing on data, diverse perspectives, and their core values.

And, for him, the guiding question has always been: “Will this create lasting value for our people, our partners, and the communities and customers we serve?”

“When I stay rooted in that purpose, even uncertain outcomes become opportunities to grow and strengthen our mission,” Joe says.

Staying Innovative in a Traditional Industry

Traditional industries are often slower to adopt innovative ideas. Joe points out that to stay innovative in a traditional industry requires balancing respect for what works with a willingness to reimagine what is possible. He ensures this by focusing on three strategies.

He says that these three strategies are: staying close to market trends, building partnerships that expose them to fresh ideas, and investing in technology that drives efficiency and sustainability. Joe says that, when it comes to leading change effectively, it is crucial to communicate a clear vision.

In addition to that, he believes it is important to align the team around shared goals and demonstrate that innovation is not disruption for its own sake, but a means of building a stronger, more resilient future.

Building Strong Leaders for Stronger, Resilient Company

In the initial phase of his career, Joe was reluctant to delegate tasks. He tried to manage too many details personally, believing it was the fastest way to achieve results. As he didn’t have much experience, he failed to realize that this approach was not only limiting his team’s growth but also causing his own burnout. “I learned the hard way that one can’t do everything alone,” Joe says.

Over the years, as he gained experience, he learned that true leadership is about trust, delegation, and empowering others to take ownership. Now, he firmly believes in building strong leaders around him. This allows him to focus his energies on the two critical aspects of the business: strategy and vision. He is also able to provide opportunities for his team to thrive. “This has made Integrated Proteins stronger and more resilient,” Joe says.

He also points out that with success comes the opportunity to multiply it by investing in people and communities. “At Integrated Proteins, I have fostered a culture built on mutual respect and perseverance, one where people are proud to come to work each day,” Joe says. “My goal is simple yet ambitious: to create the best working environment in the world.”

Remaining Grounded as a Leader

Daily meditation and exercise are what keep Joe grounded as a leader. According to him, they give him the clarity to make better decisions and the patience to navigate challenges. In addition to that, daily meditation and exercise also provide him with the energy to show up fully for his team.

“By taking care of my own well-being,” Joe says, “I’m better able to serve the people who rely on me.”

Despite his demanding professional life, Joe, who is a devoted father of two children, always has time for his family. He says that he is passionate about his family. Joe also loves animals, especially his pets, and takes pride in being part of an industry that provides them with nutritious food.

The Legacy: To Be Defined by People

Joe wants people to define his legacy at Integrated Proteins. “If, years from now, employees can say this was the best place they ever worked — a place where they were respected, challenged, and inspired — then I’ve done my job,” he says.

“Building a company is temporary,” he adds. “Building a culture that empowers people is lasting.”
