Life is often unpredictable, filled with twists and turns that shape our journey in unexpected ways. Wensia Ruiters, the Managing Director of Trace Elements Analysis Laboratories (TEA Labs), is a testament to how setbacks can lead to new beginnings. Her path to success, from her initial aspiration of becoming a medical doctor to leading one of the most innovative analytical laboratories, is both inspiring and unique.
From Medical Aspirations to Analytical Science
Wensia didn’t always envision herself in the scientific and analytical industry. Her initial dream was to become a medical doctor. After gaining acceptance into medical school at Witswatersrand University, she faced a major obstacle—failing her physics and chemistry modules in her first year. Despite a second attempt, physics remained a stumbling block, and financial constraints forced her to return to Namibia.
Undeterred, she changed course and attended the University of Namibia to obtain an honours degree in Microbiology and Chemistry. Her interest in mining and analytics was piqued by her internships at Gecko Laboratories. She became enamoured with the industry after learning about the critical function analytical procedures play in mining operations. Her amazing journey into the fields of scientific analysis and leadership began with this.
Bringing Scientific Systems into Business
With a solid academic foundation in science and technology, Wensia takes a systems-based approach to her leadership at TEA Labs. “I believe the world is governed by systems, and in order for those systems to thrive, there needs to be balance, coordination, and efficiency,” she says. Whether it’s in chemical reactions during extraction processes or in a company’s operational workflow, she recognizes that the sum of the parts must work together seamlessly to achieve success.
Her approach to business is rooted in identifying gaps and implementing solutions that drive efficiency and profitability. “People are the geniuses who create systems,” she adds, emphasizing her passion for working with individuals to enable innovative solutions that have a ripple effect on both local and international communities.
Balancing Technical Expertise with Leadership
In a leadership role that blends technical knowledge with managerial responsibilities, Wensia strikes a balance through the support of her dedicated team at TEA Labs. She credits her team for allowing her to focus on the strategic aspects of growing the business. “The shift between technical and managerial duties happens on a case-by-case basis, but my team makes it easier,” she says.
For her, leadership in the scientific field requires an appetite for risk and the ability to embrace failure as part of the process. “The science industry is volatile, with constant changes in what’s new and relevant. A leader must be agile, curious, and quick to adapt,” she asserts.
Developing Leadership Qualities Through Experience
Throughout her career, Wensia has honed her leadership qualities through the lessons life has taught her. Nature and time, she believes, are the greatest teachers. “See, listen, observe, and at the right time, act,” she advises. This patient and mindful approach to leadership has been instrumental in her success, particularly in a field that requires constant learning and adaptation.
In addition to professional experience, her personal values—authenticity, empathy, and honesty—play a vital role in her leadership style. She strives to create spaces where people feel seen and valued, fostering a culture of openness and collaboration. “When people feel seen, they reciprocate that for others,” she says, embodying an idealistic yet grounded approach to leadership.
Maintaining Work-Life Balance
As a leader, Wensia also places great importance on maintaining work-life balance, particularly in a demanding role. She credits her Christian faith and the support of her family for keeping her grounded. “My husband and kids remind me that while I strive to build a legacy for them, it’s the moments with them that make life and work worthwhile,” she shares. Exercise also plays a key role in maintaining her mental and physical well-being.
Mentorship and Female Leadership
Wensia has been fortunate to have several mentors throughout her career, but one person stands out—Dr. Phumzile Mmope, a communication expert she met during her MBA studies at Stellenbosch University. Dr. Mmope helped her transition from being an employee to becoming an employer, empowering her to embrace her femininity as a leader.
In industries dominated by men, especially mining, female leaders often feel pressured to conform to male-dominated norms. However, Dr. Mmope taught Wensia the importance of showing up authentically and confidently as a woman. “Your femininity is an instrument to your leadership—embrace it,” she advises to young women aspiring to leadership roles.
Innovating and Staying Competitive
Under Wensia’s leadership, Trace Elements Analysis Laboratories has carved a niche for itself by staying ahead of industry trends and embracing innovation. Collaboration with industry leaders like the Shimadzu Corporation enables TEA Labs to perform cutting-edge analysis and stay competitive. “We remain agile and are not averse to failing, as long as we fail quickly and learn from those failures,” she explains.
Innovation is at the heart of TEA Labs’ growth strategy. By continuously exploring new analytical technologies and methods, the company ensures that it remains at the forefront of the industry. This proactive approach not only strengthens the company’s market position but also drives continuous improvement in scientific capabilities.
Sustainability and Social Responsibility
Sustainability and social responsibility are integral to TEA Labs’ operations. The company aligns itself with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and takes a people-first approach to environmental safety. Wensia believes that diversity within the team allows for a broader perspective on environmental and social challenges, which in turn informs the company’s operational strategies.
To further support the local community, TEA Labs has implemented an internship program aimed at equipping young professionals with the skills needed to tackle environmental issues. “Our interns are immersed in projects that focus on sustainability, allowing them to contribute meaningfully while gaining valuable experience,” she says.
Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, Wensia envisions a bright future for Trace Elements Analysis Laboratories. Her long-term goals include expanding TEA Labs’ regional and international presence through collaborations and partnerships. She sees Africa as a hub of innovation and aims to position TEA Labs as a leader in providing solutions that serve global communities.
As the scientific and analytical services industry continues to evolve, she believes that TEA Labs’ agility and commitment to curiosity will keep it at the forefront of new developments. “We hope to provide solutions from Africa to the world,” she says with optimism.
Advice to Aspiring Women Leaders
For young women aspiring to leadership roles in science and technology, Wensia offers valuable advice: “You are enough. Your gift will make room for you. Own the room and master your trade. Do not dilute who you are to fit in—that’s boring.”
She encourages women to embrace their femininity as a strength and to show up authentically in their leadership roles. “Your uniqueness is your power,” she concludes.
Leaving a Legacy of Excellence
Through her work at Trace Elements Analysis Laboratories, Wensia hopes to leave a legacy that inspires others to believe in their potential. “My hope is that people will understand the excellence within them and realize that anything worthwhile is achievable,” she reflects. Her journey is a powerful reminder that with resilience, passion, and a commitment to continuous learning, we can overcome setbacks and achieve greatness.
