Diana Nyambura, Chief Executive Officer of Skyward Airlines, has always preferred the road less travelled. From childhood, she valued independent thought over group conformity, standing out and making her own decisions – a trait that shaped her confidence, sense of responsibility, and willingness to take a different path when necessary.
Today, she leads with humility and excellence, believing that being the captain does not mean having a monopoly on knowledge. She values listening to her team, respecting diverse perspectives, and fostering an environment where people feel empowered to contribute.
For Diana, leadership is about providing direction, removing obstacles, and keeping the business aligned – all while staying grounded in the people and values that matter most.
Independent Choices, Intentional Path, Lasting Impact
Even as a child, Diana remembers choosing not to follow groupthink or join in when others were doing things that she felt were wrong. āI wanted to stand out and make my own decisions. That early independence shaped my confidence, sense of responsibility and willingness to take a different path when necessary,ā she recalls.
The definitive decision that set her firmly on her professional path was starting work in 2013 while she was still at university. She joined the technical records department, but quickly realized that she would not be able to progress to become a Head of Maintenance without an engineering background.
After six months in the organization, Diana decided to pivot and position herself in an area that offered a more realistic path for professional growth. āThat experience taught me the importance of self-awareness, adaptability, and making intentional career decisions,ā she reflects, sharing a Glennon Doyle quote, āI can do hard things,ā as a mantra she believes in.
āI can do hard things.ā – Glennon Doyle.Ā
Leadership that Embodies Clarity, Humility, & Excellence
As CEO of Skyward Airlines, Dianaās leadership philosophy is rooted in humility and excellence. āBeing the captain does not mean that I have a monopoly on knowledge. I believe in listening to my team, valuing different perspectives and creating an environment where people feel empowered to contribute,ā she explains.
At the same time, she is committed to building a culture of excellence and believes that when people are given the right support, clear expectations, and the opportunity to grow, they can achieve remarkable results.
For Diana, sales, operations, and maintenance are critical areas that require consistent focus in her role as CEO. She notes that each of these areas plays an important role in the success of an airline, so she prioritizes them by ensuring that they have competent people, clear processes, and accountability across the organization.
āHaving a strong and capable team makes it possible to manage these priorities effectively. My role is to provide direction, remove obstacles and ensure that the different parts of the business remain aligned,ā she maintains.
Diana notes that the African business environment has changed significantly and is becoming increasingly dynamic, innovative, and digitally driven. Kenya, for example, has developed into a thriving digital economy, where people can order almost anything online and access a wide range of services through digital platforms.
While this transformation has created new opportunities for businesses and consumers alike, it has also increased the need for organizations to remain innovative, responsive, and willing to adapt to changing customer expectations.
āThe role of a leader is not to come up with all the great ideas. The role of a leader is to create an environment in which great ideas can happen.ā – Simon Sinek.
Leading with Resilience, Intentionality, and Heart
Diana admits that she has not yet found the perfect balance in juggling the significant demands of leading a major airline with a personal life, and is not sure that a perfect balance exists. She is still learning how to find the right balance between work, family, friendships, and personal well-being.
āThere are times when work takes priority, and my family misses out, and there are other times when I prioritize family and personal commitments. For me, it is about being intentional, recognizing what matters most at different times, and making sure that I donāt lose sight of the people and activities that keep me grounded,ā she affirms.
Diana believes that sheās at her best during difficult times. āChallenges bring out character, and I thrive in situations that require resilience, creativity, and decisive action,ā she shares, adding that the COVID-19 pandemic truly tested her resilience.
āIt was an especially difficult period. I was not the CEO of Skyward Airlines at the time, but I was part of the organization and witnessed firsthand the uncertainty and pressure it created. I truly believe that if we survived COVID-19, we can survive almost anything,ā she remarks.
That experience taught Diana to remain agile and develop strategies that can adapt as circumstances change. It also reinforced the importance of staying calm, supporting oneās team, and being prepared to make difficult decisions. Beyond organizational milestones and recognition, her idea of success is being healthy, making a meaningful impact in society, and contributing to something that outlives her.
āIt also means having the opportunity to spend quality time with my family,ā Diana insists. āProfessional achievements are important, but theyāre only one part of a fulfilling life. True success is being able to make a difference while remaining connected to the people and values that matter most.ā
āIf you resist change, you resist life.ā – Sadhguru
Mentorship, Legacy, and Purpose-Driven Leadership
As an empathetic person, Diana strongly believes in giving back and creating opportunities for others. āIāve been fortunate to receive support throughout my journey, and I believe it is important to extend that support to the next generation,ā she shares. āMy first boss in the industry played a significant role in my development. They created an enabling environment in which I could learn, grow, and take on new responsibilities. That support had a lasting impact on my career.ā
Today, Diana gives back by extending that same support to others. Through the Skyward Foundation, sheās working on coaching programs for students in schools. āI believe mentorship and early exposure can help young people build confidence, identify opportunities, and prepare for their future careers,ā she observes.
By partnering with institutions that mentor young people and providing opportunities through mentorship, internships, and other forms of outreach, Diana helps prepare future professionals for leadership roles. āI hope to contribute to a stronger pipeline of capable, confident, and purpose-driven African leaders,ā she reflects.
Her advice to aspiring leaders beginning their journey in the African business landscape: Have a dream and donāt give up on it. The journey will not always be easy, but persistence is essential. Stay innovative, build meaningful networks, and be willing to learn from others. Most importantly, do not only focus on identifying the challenges we face, but be part of finding solutions to them. Africa has enormous potential, and the next generation of leaders has an important role to play in unlocking it.
