Children around the age of five rarely talk about careers. The five-year-old Polet Muthoni Nduhiu recalls that she told her father she wanted to become a lawyer, even though she didn’t understand what it meant. Now, as a founding partner at MNN Advocates LLP, she believes law was not a career path she chose, but it was more of a calling. “Looking back, I can now see that it was God’s guiding hand shaping my path,” she says.
Even before turning 30, which she will do in May 2025, Polet has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the highly competitive legal space. She is passionate about litigation, corporate governance, high-value commercial transactions, and immigration law. For Polet, her legal work is not limited to winning for her clients. She is also focused on “building a legacy of integrity and service, one that would leave a meaningful mark on the legal community.”
Path Leading to Founding a Law Firm
When Polet first announced she wanted to become a lawyer, her parents did not laugh it off but took her seriously and nurtured her potential. She recalls that they encouraged her to read, narrate stories, and focus on developing confidence and eloquence—skills that are “invaluable” in law. “They set the foundation for who I am today,” she adds.
Polet’s desire to pursue law didn’t wane over the years. It continued throughout her school years. When she joined Kabarak University, she finally began to form an idea of the breadth of the field. Polet served as class president of her law class and later graduated at the top of her class. After passing her bar exam, she was admitted to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 2019. “These milestones solidified my belief that this is what I am supposed to do,” she says.
After a few years of practice, Polet began to feel a “compelling urge” to create something of her own. She listened to that urge and founded Muthoni Nduhiu Advocates, now called MNN Advocates LLP. “The decision was born from a desire to shape a firm that aligned with my values and commitment to service,” she says.
Polet started the firm with just one client. By working hard and networking extensively, she grew her client base. Her vision also expanded as a result of that. “Then, in October 2024, after several years of growth, I felt it was time for a rebrand,” Polet says. “That quiet voice from God reassured me that it was the right moment to realign the firm’s identity with its evolving mission.” In December 2024, they officially rebranded to MNN Advocates LLP.
A Rewarding Yet Challenging Journey
Polet describes her professional journey as both rewarding and challenging. When she began, her focus was on understanding her place in the vast legal landscape, with its numerous paths, such as litigation, corporate counsel, research, and more. According to her, it took her time to understand where she best fit. “A key turning point was finding my niche, which allowed me to define the vision for MNN Advocates,” she says.
Early on in her career, Polet handled a high-value commercial case with environmental aspects and principles where the judgment was overturned in the Court of Appeal, making this matter a landmark case. While preparing for this case, she learned the importance of hard work, attention to detail, and strategic thinking. She realized they could change the course of an entire case.
Polet is also proud of her involvement in a complex international transaction, where a U.S.-based company acquired UK subsidiaries in South Africa and Nigeria. “This experience not only gave me a broader perspective on international business but also showed me the importance of understanding diverse legal frameworks in a globalized world,” Polet says.
In a short time, under Polet’s visionary leadership, MNN Advocates has become the “go-to firm” for immigration advisory and applications in Kenya. For her, this growth has been a major source of pride, knowing we are making a tangible impact for our clients, as immigration law is more than just paperwork for us—it’s about helping people find opportunities and building bridges across borders.
Her biggest accomplishment, however, has been building a team. “And, I like to say God gave me the vision, but He also gave me a team to see that vision through,” Polet adds. “So, when I count my blessings, I count my team twice. My legacy is not only what I do and leave for them but in them.”
What Does the Future Hold?
In the next 5-10 years, Polet envisions MNN Advocates expanding its global reach through strategic partnerships with law firms and entrepreneurs. “Africa is a continent full of resources and potential,” Polet says. “Our people are incredibly resilient and capable, often overcoming challenges with creativity and innovation. Africa’s future in the legal and business world is bright, and I believe MNN Advocates will be at the forefront of shaping that future.”
Polet plans to create a collective of firms united by shared values like integrity, competence, and a commitment to justice. These partnerships will help open new markets and enable African businesses and investors to move beyond being recipients of foreign investment, positioning them as active players on the global stage. Polet is also focused on evolving MNN Advocates’ services to meet emerging industry needs, such as technology and sustainable development. “Innovation isn’t just about adopting new technology—it’s about ensuring that our legal services remain relevant and impactful in an ever-evolving marketplace,” she adds.
Stepping Up to Be a Global Player
MNN Advocates has adapted to serve clients from diverse backgrounds, with a focus on tailoring legal services to meet the unique needs and compliance requirements of each jurisdiction. Polet explains, “We’ve made it a priority to ensure that we not only understand the intricacies of African laws but also keep ourselves attuned to global trends and best practices.”
With clients across Kenya, Africa, the U.S., Europe, and Australia, the firm has positioned itself as a global player. “The legal landscape is increasingly interconnected, and our ability to navigate this interconnectedness with competence and integrity sets us apart,” Polet says. This approach has allowed MNN Advocates to build a reputation as a law firm that understands the global nature of business and legal environments and has further positioned MNN Advocates as a true global player.
A Leader’s Approach and Message
Polet’s leadership is driven by a desire to inspire and empower those around her. “Leadership is about setting a vision, inspiring others, and empowering them to reach their highest potential,” she says. She leads with clarity, conviction, and kindness, fostering an environment where collaboration and accountability thrive.
Her leadership philosophy is rooted in the mentorship she’s received. “I’m a product of the guidance and wisdom of my mentors,” she reflects. “I feel a profound responsibility to pass that on.”
Polet’s faith in Jesus Christ serves as the foundation of her leadership. “It shapes my approach to leading with compassion, humility, and an unwavering commitment to doing what is right,” she explains.
Advice for Aspiring Leaders in the Legal Industry
Polet’s advice to aspiring leaders is simple but powerful: stay authentic and competent. “In a field like law, it’s essential to be true to who you are,” she says. “Authenticity builds trust.” She emphasizes the importance of competence, urging young lawyers to know their craft inside out and to continually refine their skills.
“It’s okay to have a dream and chase it with determination and integrity,” she advises. She ends with her favorite quote from William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar:
“There is a tide in the affairs of men,
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
On such a full sea are we now afloat;
And we must take the current when it serves,
Or lose our ventures.”
