Richard North, aka Rich North, owner of Express Employment Professionals of Peoria, guides his business and his team with a leadership philosophy built on three non-negotiable pillars such as integrity, effort, and patience.
Integrity is Rich’s mandate to do the right thing, even when the lights are off. It means being selfless and ensuring every decision serves the greater good of his team. Effort, he believes, cannot be taught. It is a sheer, internal commitment to a goal. Reaching that finish line sometimes demands sacrificing sleep or personal time. However, Rich has always focused on a core truth. The reward must outweigh the sacrifice. Patience, the third pillar, is a skill he developed through years of experience. It allows him to pause before reacting, remain composed when facing adversity, and maintain faith that consistent work will eventually yield results.
This system was profoundly molded by a simple, dispiriting lesson he learned in middle school. Month after month, Rich watched his peers receive the coveted Student of the Month award. He worked tirelessly, focusing on achievement, yet he came up short every single time. Despite the disappointment, he never let up. He remained consistent.
By the end of the year, Rich felt defeated. He attended the awards ceremony, certain he was not good enough. His focus had drifted by the time the final award, Student of the Year, was announced. He mentally checked out.
The teacher delivered a powerful speech about the winner, describing a student who represented the best of the school. Rich counted himself out immediately. He had failed to win the monthly awards; surely, he couldn’t win the biggest prize. But then the teacher announced, “The Student of the Year is Richard North.”
The shock was total. Rich, in his disbelief, barely registered the announcement. That moment changed his perspective forever. He realized one thing. That all those steady, behind-the-scenes efforts, the ones that never earned him the smaller wins, are what ultimately carried him to the bigger one. This inveterate understanding of delayed gratification and consistent effort is the foundation for how he leads and shows up today.
Measuring Success in Lives Impacted
Rich is one of those brilliant entrepreneurs who doesn’t gauge success simply by financial reports. His true barometer is the number of lives he and his team impact. The recruiting and staffing industry involves creating critical partnerships. Rich’s team works with companies to create jobs within the community. These partnerships are rarely easy. They require trust, deep relationships, and consultation. Rich and his team must be subject matter experts, ready to provide solutions to complex client problems.
The ultimate win, however, focuses on the individual associate. Many people who come to Express Employment Professionals are facing desperate situations. They may be struggling with homelessness, eviction, or vehicle repossession. They are dealing with basic daily-life struggles.
Rich’s company succeeds when it helps these individuals find jobs or careers. Finding work helps remove that struggle. For Rich, “Even if it’s only temporarily, that’s a win in my book.”
The Test of Six Figures
Climbing the stairs to an entrepreneurial peak, like any steep ascent, never comes without challenges. For Rich, one of the earliest and toughest tests occurred during his first year in business.
A large client of the agency was acquired in Richs first year of ownership. Soon after, their communication started to drop off. Rich’s team grew concerned when the accounts payable department became unresponsive. Invoices began stacking up, becoming past due. The outstanding debt eventually mounted to nearly six figures.
Although the debt belonged to the client, Rich, as the owner, automatically assumed the financial burden. He knew this moment would be a definitive test, showing his staff what kind of leader he was. The business leader immediately started developing a strategy. He created a full plan to resolve the massive debt left by the client. There were no guarantees the plan would succeed. He shares, “But I knew I had to see it through completely before I threw in the white towel.”
It took the determined owner eight long months to resolve the full debt. Today, he is grateful that the crisis happened in his first year. It provided an invaluable, early lesson that shaped his resilient leadership style.
The Constant Pressure of Balancing
“When I think about balance in entrepreneurship, at times it has to be forced,” Rich admits. He continues, “My mind never shuts off; even when it’s supposed to be resting, I’m always thinking about how to be the best, how I can help more people, and how I can help more clients.”
These constant professional demands mean the leader must consciously carve out personal space. Rich finds he has to intentionally separate himself from the business. This means being deliberate about allocating time to his wife and children. This necessary separation is made possible by the strength of his team. The owner built a healthy internal culture. He now benefits from a staff that is just as committed to the company’s core values and goals as he is.
Another crucial component of his balance is physical health. Rich makes sure to exercise. He tries to complete at least a 30-minute workout three mornings a week. Starting the day this way helps relieve stress and allows the leader to think with clarity.
Driving Alignment Through Daily Huddles
This thoughtful business leader prioritizes a daily routine to keep his team aligned and energized. His operation runs on two critical meetings every day, i.e., a morning and an afternoon huddle.
The morning meeting is staff-led. This structure is intentional. It gives every team member a voice and empowers them to hold each other accountable. It ensures they show up for one another from the start of the day.
The afternoon meeting is run by Rich. This is the time to review objectives in depth. The goal is to ensure all team efforts are fully aligned with the requirements and goals of their clients.
Beyond these meetings, the staff is motivated by performance markers. This includes weekly rankings within the region and tracking individual monthly production. Rich also sets up side goals to keep the work fresh and competitive. Above all, the single greatest motivator for the team is, at its core, winning as a team. That collective accomplishment remains the top priority for the operation.
The Courage to Transition
When asked about his proudest achievement, Rich looks back at his decade of work before owning Express Employment Professionals. He worked for one organization for ten years, an experience that largely groomed him into the leader he is today. His proudest moment was stirring up the courage to leave that organization. It was a major step into the unknown.
That decision was informed by years of facing rejection there. In 2016, he first sought a promoted role. He was declined three times for the opportunity. On a separate occasion, his application was outright rejected, despite having outstanding producer numbers.
Despite the setbacks, Rich never stopped believing in himself. He reflects, “No matter how many times I was rejected or declined, I knew I was going to earn my place in leadership.”
The transition into entrepreneurship, becoming an owner with Express Employment Professionals, was remarkable. It didn’t just change his life but validated the entire difficult journey that preceded it. He understood that every rejection and struggle was a lesson well taught. Today, this very spirit earned him an esteemed place among ‘The 10 Business Minds Defining the Next Era of Leadership, 2026.’ We see it shape everything he touches. Rich is truly rich in resolve.
Expanding the Employment Ecosystem
Rich views his work as an important component in the future growth of his community’s workforce. Many companies headquartered elsewhere are actively looking to expand. They seek new cities, new states, and new partnerships for growth. This is where the team at Express Employment Professionals steps in. They consistently find innovative ways to help both their associates and their clients. Their method involves a blend of smart consulting and partnership building.
The insightful founder sees his impact extending far beyond traditional staffing. He recently established Northbound Health, a company serving individuals with developmental disabilities in Arizona. Helping this population has always been a deep personal passion for him.
Rich is confident in both companies’ ability to achieve consistent year-over-year growth. This confidence stems from working with teams who are as passionate about their mission as he is.
Advising The Generation Next
When advising aspiring business owners, Rich’s core message is precise. He starts with, “Don’t be afraid to go against the grain.” Many leaders fear being viewed as the “black sheep” or being labeled selfish. However, the experienced executive notes that there is a strategic advantage to playing that game.
The most important advice the leader offers is team-centric. He urges new owners to build a team that will genuinely follow the core values. That team must be ready to execute the mission, no matter what difficulties arise.
Leading with purpose and resilience requires vulnerability. Rich reminds these aspirants, “As a leader, you cannot be afraid to make mistakes, be vulnerable, and admit to those mistakes, but more importantly, never stop moving.”
It’s okay not to have all the answers at times. Rich feels that the best leaders admit when they don’t know exactly what they are doing and proactively seek help. He sets the tone here. This humility and relentless movement define purposeful leadership.
Leveraging Social Media for Agility
The employment industry is constantly evolving, demanding that Rich and his team stay agile. To remain innovative, the leader relies on several continuous education strategies. One reliable source he utilizes is social media. This platform provides significant value for staying current on industry trends. Rich names LinkedIn as a personal favorite. When leveraged correctly, this professional platform offers numerous avenues for learning, including practical tools for the everyday professional.
Innovation also comes from broad curiosity. Rich is never afraid to ask questions. He seeks insight from professionals in different industries to understand their workforce struggles and the strategies they have implemented.
Lastly, networking events and business forums are crucial. These gatherings provide brilliant ways for the owner to stay educated and keep his operation ahead of the curve in a fast-moving market.
Integrity Over Lucrative Deals
He is a man of principle. His personal beliefs have directly influenced business decisions on several occasions. There have been times when Rich chose to walk away from deals with potential clients. He prefers not to go into extreme detail about the specific reasons why he declined.
And yes, many of these opportunities were often highly lucrative. The deciding factor for him was always ethical clarity. Rich explains with sincerity, “They just didn’t align with my beliefs.”
Service on the Front Line
A rising tide lifts all boats. To Rich, this philosophy makes community engagement a massive part of his leadership style. He currently serves on the executive board for the National Association for Healthcare Service Executives (NAHSE), a nonprofit organization. Being involved in the community offers the leader a healthy escape from the high-pressure competitive aspects of his industry.
Mentorship is equally vital. Because it helped him personally, Rich feels a responsibility to provide that same service back to others. He defines authentic leaders by three traits. In his words, “Real leaders in my eyes are servants, competitors, and they’re relentless.”
Rich acknowledges that many community members feel leaders are often out of reach. That perception drives his actions. It is crucial to him that he remains in the community, actively helping on the front line.
Adapting to the AI Evolution
Rich predicts that the next generation of business leaders in any industry will be ushering in the AI technology movement. This integration will transform the employment & workforce management industry big time.
He notes there are clear pros and cons to this evolution But if used correctly, AI can significantly enhance a person’s application and way of thinking. However, this industry veteran has also observed it being used improperly, thereby inhibiting real-time problem-solving.
Over time technology will continue to evolve rapidly. Who will sustain this surge? Rich underscores, “The people who are adapting and integrating into the AI evolution will be the ones in the next generation who will run and own market share in the workforce industry in the coming generation.”
The Legacy of Bringing People Along & Family
Rich has a simple, powerful vision for his legacy. He wants to be labeled as ‘the best to ever do it in this industry.’ More important than the personal accololades is his family. Rich accredits his ability to be a flexible leader to his loving wife Ana. With her support Rich has been able to work tireless hours when projects are on tight deadlines and has been supportive in times of failure. Married 7 years with two beautiful children. Rich understands that faith and family is extremely important to not only be a good leader professionally but also at home. Setting an example to my wife and children is his priority and one of the secrets to his success.
But his ambition extends beyond personal accolades. He wants his legacy to be characterized by bringing people with him. He comprehends that success is not achieved in isolation. Leaders often get caught up in their own achievements and forget the supporting cast that elevated them.
“Leadership sometimes could be a lonely road,” Rich acknowledges. But he believes, “it is infinitely better to serve others along the way and ensure you are bringing people with you on the journey.”
Rich doesn’t worry about being recognized across the entire industry. When he closes this professional chapter, he only needs one acknowledgment that he helped a ton of people, changed some lives, and did it all with his whole heart. That is the legacy he can live with.
“Perhaps,” he concludes, “One day I may write a book about it.”
