Steffen Bux: Bringing Creativity, Precision, and Purpose to the Future of Lighting

Every product tells a story long before it reaches the customer. It begins as an idea, takes shape through countless conversations, drawings, prototypes, and revisions, and ultimately becomes something that improves the spaces where people live and work.

Few people understand that journey better than Steffen Bux, Head of OEM Business & Asia Operations at Molto Luce. Over the past two decades, he has built a career at the intersection of design, manufacturing, sourcing, and international business, helping transform concepts into products while building strong relationships across cultures and continents.

It is not only because of his technical skills or his international background that makes Steffen a unique leader, but his unique way of looking at every situation. The experience of playing music in different bands, traveling in Asia and getting his inspiration from mountain biking trips instead of office meetings helped him understand that creativity goes hand in hand with discipline.

Whether it is inventing a better solution for the lighting systems, mentoring young leaders or improving the company’s international cooperation, he is still driven by the same three principles – curiosity, collaboration and improvement of the existing things.

“Leadership is not about standing above the team; it is about moving forward together with vision, trust and shared motivation.”

From Chance Encounter to Lifelong Passion

Unlike major professionals who start their journey knowing where they want to go, the beginning of Steffen’s professional career in lighting was quite unexpected. Introduced to Deko Light via the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Germany, he started working for the company somewhat late compared to the other apprentices. However, the late start did not turn out to be an obstacle because of Steffen’s outstanding academic performance, which allowed him to finish his apprenticeship six months ahead of schedule.

Another landmark moment came when he went to Hong Kong as the assistant of the Managing Director when he was just twenty-three. This journey provided him with a glimpse of doing international business and taught him how vibrant the entrepreneurial environment is in many Asian countries. This trip turned out to be so fruitful that, eventually, it made him move to Hong Kong in 2015.

Along the way, Steffen deliberately broadened his expertise beyond commercial responsibilities, gaining hands-on knowledge in LED technology, production, project management, product development, strategic purchasing, and supply chain management. Looking back, he says he can hardly imagine working in any other industry because lighting combines creativity, engineering, and problem-solving in ways that continue to inspire him.

Choosing the Work That Inspires You

After spending twelve years with Deko Light, Steffen felt it was time to challenge himself in a different environment. His move to Lampenwelt, later the LUQOM Group, introduced him to the fast-moving world of e-commerce, digital sales, category management, and investor-driven business. The experience broadened his commercial perspective and sharpened his strategic thinking, but it also revealed something important about his own motivations.

“I realized that I was moving further away from what has always driven me most: the product itself, product development and the passion for lighting, interior and design.”

This made the opportunity with Molto Luce all the more significant for him, as joining this company enabled him to grow its OEM business along with coming back to the creative end of the business that had initially attracted him.

Today, he merges his strategic skills with product development, working hand-in-hand with colleagues from Austria and Asia to enhance cooperation and come up with innovative solutions and grow the OEM offerings of the company. This position, according to him, involves everything that he loves doing, international cooperation, product development, trustworthy relations, and creating something of value.

“A good product is not only something new — it is something that makes sense commercially, technically and responsibly.”

Lessons Learned Beyond the Office

The philosophy of leadership of Steffen has formed not only under his business experience but also under other circumstances. Many years in addition to managing his international career, he played in bands, giving concerts, recording music albums, and touring. Music made him a great leader.

Successful performance can only happen if everybody brings something into the game. While the listeners may concentrate on the performance of the singer, each instrument has its role. So does leadership in Steffen’s opinion.

“Good leadership begins with good communication. Without a deep understanding of my team and its members, I will never be able to empower them correctly and succeed.”

Not just hierarchical system but environment of trust, challenge, and encouragement is what he wants to create. Initiative and independent thought are valued by him, as well as the ability to empathize and listen. Invention is not a one-man show for Steffen, innovation happens because different people have different points of view.

“Real impact often starts with questioning what already exists and asking how we can make it better.”

Finding Perspective in Motion

In international manufacturing, there’s never a straight line. Political, consumer, logistic, and market changes are all unpredictable and require flexibility. Rather than attempt to manage every hour of his day, Steffen prefers to be well-prepared with an appropriate amount of flexibility for any situation that may arise. The biggest source of his balance is outside of work. It is biking, hiking, and being out in nature, which gives him the mind reset that helps him tackle problems more effectively.

“Balance for me is about movement, about challenging my body, and about being in a place where I don’t have to look at a screen or intake some other stream of information.”

Steffen applies his philosophy even in setbacks, likening them to riding a tough mountain bike trail: a wrong turn may cause a fall, but the real lesson is in rising, learning, and moving forward. He views business much the same way. Becoming a father shifted his perspective further, while it is one of life’s greatest joys, it reminded him that success isn’t defined only by career wins. Balancing ambition with family responsibilities has become a challenge he values deeply.

Building People Before Building Products

Steffen believes mentoring is about leading by example rather than giving instructions. He emphasizes creativity, curiosity, and ownership as traits leaders must show daily to inspire their teams. He also values the unique strengths individuals bring, whether in building systems, designing products, manufacturing, or understanding customers, and sees his role as combining these talents effectively.

Steffen believes that good product development requires much more than good ideas. They require understanding of production reality, cost, customer expectations, logistics, sustainability, and market timing. In order to come up with successful solutions, individuals need to see the whole picture.

The same approach is followed in strategic decision making. Each department has its own perspective of an opportunity that may be either technical, commercial, or operational. Steffen tries to listen, explain the overall objective, and find a balanced solution. When individuals know the rationale of the decision, they are ready to buy into it.

“In product and design, facts guide the decision — but experience and intuition often show where the real opportunity begins.”

Creating a Meaningful Legacy

Over the years, Steffen has achieved many milestones professionally; whether exceeding business targets and increasing profitability, producing successful products or having some of his own ideas registered or winning awards. The accolade which he appreciates the most was not a trophy or any kind of title. It was simply a conversation which made him realize that relationships, trust and respect endure more than business results.

The contribution which Steffen Bux would like to make in Molto Luce and in the entire lighting industry is not just a product released and money made but rather a way of thinking. According to him, the future of the lighting industry lies in being smart, being modular and being sustainable and at the same time asking himself a question whether innovation means being new all the time.

If he leaves behind teams which remain creative, collaborative, and curious as well as responsible when taking on challenges, then he is sure that his success lies not only in personal accomplishments but something much more significant. Indeed, for Steffen, the best ideas are not those which shed light on places but those which motivate people to create a better world.
