Research, Scholarship and Teaching
Long Island University’s research activity continues to grow as indicated by a record number of acquired research grants and expenditures, as well as recognitions. LIU is in the top seven percent of research institutions in the U.S. as designated by the Carnegie Classification, the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education for the past four and a half decades.
This stature has attracted numerous enterprises, international organizations and governmental institutions to partner with the University to advance knowledge. In the past year, LIU hosted the first ever Biobridge International Scientific Conference, during which collaborative research frameworks between the University and medical device manufacturer RegenLab USA were announced.
The University also hosted the International Summit on Plastic Pollution: From Research to Action in partnership with the Global Council for Science and the Environment, and the Office for Science and Technology of the Embassy of France in the United States.
LIU proudly co-hosted the eighth annual International Symposium on the Living Heart & Virtual Human Twin with Dassault Systèmes. The University’s partnership with this Fortune Future 50 company had led to the establishment of the 3DEXPERIENCE Edu Center of Excellence, which focuses on research with high societal impact to advance the fields of pharmaceutical sciences, precision medicine and health care in the digital age. LIU is one of only six such centers of excellence around the world and is the only one of them to specialize in life sciences.
Dassault Systèmes will also collaborate with the University in its state-of-the-art research and training center for the College of Science, which will house the Center of Excellence in Life Science and Research. The College received a $10 million grant from the Empire State Development Corporation to help fund its construction.
Recruiting nationally recognized researchers and faculty, and accomplished administrative leaders, has been a focus of the University’s drive to deliver superior programs. In recent years, the University has made key hires who have achieved success in commercial fields and academic funded research, with demonstrated commitment to the University’s strategic plan’s vision and strategy.
Experiential Learning and Partnerships
The University leadership’s commitment to experiential learning has inspired the development of innovative academic programs focused on modern job market demands.
LIU Global offers a one-of-a-kind bachelor’s degree around the globe, with students spending each of eight semesters in a new country while preparing for careers as global leaders in business, policy, humanitarian relief, social entrepreneurship, economic development, and environmental sustainability. The Honors College, one of the oldest in the nation, gives high performing students a challenging academic environment with smaller class sizes, mentorship, and an exclusive Honors College Village with state-of-the-art amenities.
The College of Veterinary Medicine is one of only four veterinary colleges in the northeast, along with Cornell University, Tufts University and the University of Pennsylvania. The College’s state-of-the-art Veterinary Learning Center features state-of-the art student-faculty research laboratory spaces comprising diagnostic imaging laboratories, lecture halls, a skills laboratory, and surgical rooms. All labs utilize artificial intelligence platforms and other advanced technology.
The Roc Nation School of Music, Sports and Entertainment resulted from a partnership with LIU and JAY-Z, offering talented students’ internships and access to top leaders in the sports and entertainment industry. The School of Film and Digital Media offers a comprehensive, project-based curriculum that exposes students to each aspect of filmmaking, allowing them to graduate with a portfolio of short, documentary, and feature-length films. The school’s advisory board includes former Paramount Pictures executive Michael Tadross, award-winning actor and TVhost Whoopi Goldberg, and Broadway producer Wendy Federman.
The Roosevelt School’s White House Experience serves as an experiential learning space to enhance civic education and foster presidential studies. Joining with the Society of Presidential Descendants, the School launched National Civics Day and provides students access to world leaders, including President Biden, former Presidents Bush and Clinton, and diplomats from around the world.
Arts and Athletics
The LIU Sharks Division I athletic program has expanded to include 38 teams. In 2021-22, the Sharks swept the three Northeast Conference awards — the Brenda Weare Commissioner’s Cup, the Joan Martin Women’s Commissioner’s Cup and the NEC Men’s Commissioner’s Cup – making it the top-performing men’s, women’s and overall athletic program in the Northeast Conference.
The Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post is Long Island’s premier concert hall. For almost 40 years, Tilles Center has hosted more than 70 performances each season by world renowned artists in music, theater and dance. Tilles Center was the first to bring the New York Philharmonic to Long Island, and Bruce Springsteen’s legendary “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” was recorded there.
Leadership
The implementation of the Strategic Plan is being led by Kimberly R. Cline, Ph.D., the University’s president since 2013, who emphasizes experiential learning, and excellence in teaching and research. Under her leadership, LIU has launched transformative and innovative strategic plans that have led to university-wide increases in graduation rates and average SAT/ACT scores of incoming students.
During that _me, the University’s endowment has increased by more than 350 percent, allowing for more scholarships. A commitment to a two percent cap on annual tuition rate increases has made LIU one of the most affordable private universities in the region.
Student Life, Student Success
Long Island University currently enrolls more than 15,000 students, many of whom achieve accolades for their participation in local, regional, national and international academic competitions, and charitable endeavors. In the past year alone: LIU was the only veterinary school in the country to place in the individual and team veterinary student categories at the 22nd annual American Veterinary Medical Association Animal Welfare Assessment Contest; the Model United Nations team was named “Distinguished Delegation” in the world’s largest intercollegiate Model United Nations competition in New York City; and LIU Post’s annual Relay for Life raised more than $50,000 for the American Cancer Society, with more than 600 students participating.
Long Island University is championing engaged learning opportunities that challenge students to develop their talents by solving real problems, and helping to produce socially engaged, intellectually vibrant, global leaders and thinkers. The mission of LIU Cares is to provide a destination for individuals at LIU to develop thoughtful approaches to community engagement, service learning and discovery. More than 7,500 Long Island University students, alumni and staff volunteer more than 150,000 hours each year in the service of others through LIU Cares.
Toward 2030
As Long Island University approaches its centenary in 2026, the institution has embarked upon an aggressive effort to fulfill its vision of becoming a nationally recognized, globally engaged teaching and research university. This effort, the
LIU Strategic Plan 2030 encompasses four institutional goals: The advancement of academic excellence through innovation; solutions for a sustainable global future; exceptional fiscal health and agility; and student engagement through extraordinary and distinctive experiences.
This strategic plan aligns with the University’s continuing mission to provide excellence and access in private higher education to those who seek to expand their knowledge and prepare themselves for meaningful, educated lives and for service to their communities and the world.
Awards and Recognitions
Long Island University has been recognized for its achievements in a variety of areas.
In addition to its Carnegie Classification, the University has attained distinction as a Top 100 National University for Social Mobility (USNews & World Report), one of the Best Northeastern Colleges (Princeton Review), a Top 30 performing arts program (Backstage), and a Top 200 graduate program in nursing (USNews & World Report).
The University’s dedication to excellence in the performing arts is reflected by the LIU Post Theatre Company’s having won 20 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Awards. The University’s commitment to educating the next generation of business leaders has resulted in the School of Business’s accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a recognition earned by fewer than five percent of the more than 16,000 business degree granting institutions worldwide.
