Where Law Meets Purpose: The Story of Anaïs Symenouh

Some leaders enter the legal arena based upon their interests in schooling or chance occurrences. Anaïs Symenouh was exposed to the legal profession at a young age and as a result developed many of her values around that experience. Her father, the Managing Director of an insurance company, held a PhD in law and taught the subject as well, while her mother worked as a Notary. Growing up in a home that practiced law gave Anaïs a sense of stability, fairness, and responsibility about everything she encountered and experienced in life. She developed respect for others through this experience and developed a foundation of being reliable and being clear to create order from chaos. All of this formed her leadership style that is calm and has a motivated purpose that can help others through difficult times with confidence.

Although, Anaïs was familiar with law, she soon realized she wanted a more expansive career in her professional life than just practicing law. She liked working with the legal model, but at the same time, she missed working with financial numbers. She decided to combine her law studies with corporate finance and this opened up a new area of work in the field of financial law. A turning point occurred for Anaïs when she met the General Counsel for EBI SA, the Paris office for Ecobank. He provided Anaïs with different insights into her career path and he helped her recognise that the practice of law is much more than a limited field but rather a strategic tool; one that can help to shape the course of events.

Building a Global View of Risk

Anaïs’s work within various legal systems exposed her to the varying definitions of risk across jurisdictions. While there is value in written laws, regulations, etc.; the culture (regulatory) and the political environment; as well as the value of relationships between people, all add to the complexity of determining an organization’s level of risk. She worked in both very structured and very fast-moving environments, which has provided her with a balanced perspective of working within a structured environment and adapting to rapid changes in many African markets. This combination allows Anaïs to provide strategic direction to organizations during times of uncertainty.

Anaïs explains that understanding risk is not only about interpreting laws but about understanding how people think and how local economies evolve. The ability to combine structure with flexibility has become one of her strongest assets in her work at African Risk Capacity Ltd.

Leadership Through Clarity and Steady Presence

For Anaïs, leadership in a legal department goes far beyond technical skill. It is about keeping people centered when situations become difficult or negotiation uncertain. In a risk management organization, she believes the legal team cannot simply highlight problems or sit on the sidelines. Instead, they must offer clarity and guidance so the rest of the organization can make informed decisions.

Her approach is grounded in calmness. When tension rises, she focuses on solutions rather than pressure. As she says, it is her responsibility to stay present and steady because that attitude often creates space for progress. Leadership, to her, requires commitment, consistency and genuine investment in people. She adds that showing up for the team makes all the difference in challenging moments.

Resilience Developed Through Complex Projects

Anaïs’s experience working with public private partnerships was one of the most influential phases in her professional development. Public private partnerships typically involve multiple stakeholders such as Governments; Donors and Investors; often have different goals and frequently change their rules and provide a very complex environment and require strong patience and diplomacy, as well as an ability to see an issue through multiple lenses.

Anaïs learned that sometimes patience is a result of changing perspectives. Connecting with the other party to understand their concerns rather than just focusing on defending your position can provide the opportunity to identify ways to help them resolve their challenges, as well as provide an opportunity for you to resolve your obstacles. This has allowed Anaïs to resolve many complex situations and has influenced the way that she continues to approach collaboration within the workplace.

Values That Shape Every Decision

Integrity and fairness guide Anaïs in every part of her leadership. She believes people can accept difficult decisions when they trust the process and feel respected. Simplicity and clarity also play a key role in her work. Risk management can become overwhelming, and she sees her responsibility as removing unnecessary complexity so people can focus on what truly matters and is at stake.

She often shares the story of an orchid she kept on her desk during her time at Rexel. The plant did not bloom for months, yet she continued to care for it. One morning, it suddenly produced flowers. For her, this represents the long-term nature of leadership. Results take time, but consistency creates progress. She reminds herself that she can only do her best and that sincere effort allows her to stand by her choices even when outcomes are not ideal.

Complex Legal Systems and Human Impact

At African Risk Capacity Ltd., Anaïs Symenouh works across multiple countries with different regulatory approaches. Navigating this environment requires more than strong legal arguments. It requires trust, listening and solutions that respect each jurisdiction. She explains that success is not about winning every point but about building common ground. Her work contributes to a mission that protects vulnerable communities from climate related risks, which makes every challenge worthwhile.

Finding Renewal and Purpose Beyond Work

When asked about work life balance, Anaïs offers an honest answer. She does not believe perfect balance exists. Instead, she adjusts her focus depending on the season she is in. Some periods are driven by career demands, while others require her to invest more time in her family, her faith or her personal wellbeing.

She sometimes retreats to an abbey for a few days without phones or emails to reflect and realign with her purpose. Music and hiking help her regain perspective and energy. Through personal experiences, she has learned to extend grace to herself and others, recognizing that many are carrying invisible burdens.

Achievements Rooted in Collective Strength

One of the accomplishments Anaïs is most proud of was leading several legal functions during the second COVID lockdown in France, including corporate law, financial law, and overseeing the financial legal aspects of certain M&A transactions. Despite market instability and intense pressure, the teams completed two major bond issuances totaling 600 million euros in only three weeks. Many team members joined late calls after putting children to bed or managing personal stress, even in the midst of caring for family members with COVID or working demanding shifts in the health sector. What stood out to Anaïs was the collective determination to achieve a common goal. As she said, it reminded her that companies run on people who rise together even in difficult times.

Guiding the Next Generation

Anaïs focuses on teaching her team how to approach legal challenges. She encourages them to explain their reasoning because mistakes can become valuable lessons when thinking is clear. She wants them to grow into trusted advisors who understand the operational and human impact of their work. Her dedication to mentorship extends beyond the office. She recently co launched the JKS Foundation with her father to support students in Togo in finding their academic direction and accessing education. This work reflects her belief that empowering others is central to leadership.

A Legacy Focused on People

Anaïs believes legal departments must help create the conditions for sustainable innovation. They play an important role in building frameworks that allow new financing and risk transfer solutions to grow responsibly. She also emphasizes the importance of strong networks and proactive systems to stay ahead of evolving legal frameworks. Waiting for laws to be enacted, she explains, is too late.

Anaïs Symenouh is most concerned with how her legacy will affect the lives of others. She is proud of her achievements in leading the legal aspects of creating an inclusive insurance portfolio worth over $20 million, but she believes legal work is merely a tool for achieving this goal. Central to her mission is the protection of vulnerable populations, particularly those at risk from climate-related events. By helping design financing solutions that provide a safety net for the most at-risk communities, Anaïs ensures that her work not only drives professional success but also has a lasting, positive impact on those who need support the most. Her efforts contribute to countries’ and communities’ broader goals that prioritize the well-being, resilience, and empowerment of vulnerable groups in the face of adversity.

The level to which she has helped others build confidence, empower themselves, and create a positive support system for themselves is of paramount importance to her. This also extends to supporting colleagues and other departments in building robust legal culture. She takes pride in collaborating with cross-functional teams to establish sound legal frameworks, fostering an environment where legal understanding is shared and accessible. The fact that she is able to help someone to strengthen their legal expertise and soft skills far outweighs anything she has done through transactional work. Her commitment lies in enabling others to thrive and in creating sustainable support systems across the organization.
