Women leaders continue to redefine success, navigating careers that research shows often follow nonlinear paths and interrupted timelines as compared to their male counterparts, while still making significant contributions across various fields. Among these influential figures is Andrea Earl Clarke, the Co- Founder and Co-Chair of The Labor and Honor Foundation. Her journey is a testament to the power of conviction in one’s values, dedication to professional development and continuing education, and the relentless pursuit of making a difference.
In this article, we delve into Andrea’s inspiring story, her leadership philosophy, and the impact of her work.
The Birth of a Vision: The Labor and Honor Foundation
Andrea Earl Clarke’s journey began with a shared dream between her and her husband, James. “The idea for The Labor and Honor Foundation came about early on in our marriage when James and I were dreaming of ways we hoped to contribute to our community and give back someday,” she explains. Their sense of gratitude for their own blessings fueled their desire to help others. Inspired by community leaders and philanthropists, they believed they needed to incorporate personal giving into their lives much sooner than what might have seemed financially feasible.
Their involvement in various boards in Salt Lake City provided them with a deeper understanding of the nonprofit sector’s importance. While they both had always been active volunteers, the couple began giving monetarily under the name “Labor and Honor” for its special meaning to James’ childhood. “Labore et Honore,” from the Clarke Family crest, was a lesson in hard work and integrity that James’ parents instilled in him. This resonated deeply with Andrea, who was raised by public school teachers who valued hard work, honesty, and integrity.
Transformative Growth: Personal and Professional Evolution
Andrea’s role as Co-Founder and Co-Chair has profoundly impacted her personal and professional growth. “My nonprofit leadership roles have taken me down paths I never dreamed were possible when I first began my career,” she shares. Partnering with James in this work has provided a unique opportunity for the couple, though the direct leadership role often falls on her due to James’ commitments elsewhere.
Despite Andrea now serving as the chair or board member for several nonprofits including the Stella H. Oaks Foundation which raises scholarship funds for single mothers, as well as the governor appointed Trustee for Utah Valley University (Utah’s largest university by enrollment), Andrea was initially reluctant to step forward in leadership roles in the nonprofit sector. Her early career saw great success in pharmaceuticals and some of the world’s fastest growing computer companies, but she had had limited exposure to the nonprofit sector. As such, Andrea pursued a master’s degree in nonprofit management from Columbia University. “I was completely intimidated by the thought of applying to an Ivy League school, especially since I had been away from college for so many years,” she recalls. Earning this degree boosted her confidence and knowledge, shaping her both personally and professionally.
Andrea’s leadership style is deeply influenced by her upbringing. “As a daughter of two lifelong teachers, I have a great respect for educators and for the power of education to transform lives,” she explains. She believes in lifelong learning and encourages others to embrace professional development opportunities.
Steering the Ship & Celebrating Success
As the Founder and Co-Chair, Andrea closely oversees the foundation’s work and provides oversight for their Executive Director. “Together with my family, we set the strategy, implement our grantmaking and other initiatives, and stay involved with our favorite causes and organizations,” she explains.
One such organization is The Labor & Honor Center, a day services center for adults with disabilities. The Center is a team favorite of the various Clarke businesses for volunteer opportunities, spending time with and celebrating holidays with the center’s special friends.
Balancing Act: Harmonizing Professional and Personal Life
Balancing professional responsibilities with personal life is a challenge Andrea faces head-on. “I rarely feel a sense of balance when it comes to the demands in my personal and professional life,” she admits. Prioritizing family first allows her to operate authentically in her professional endeavors. However, her children witness the sacrifices made for community work, understanding commitment to others as a cherished value.
One of Andrea’s key strategies for maintaining a healthy work-life balance is involving her children in the foundation’s activities and volunteer opportunities. “Each of our teenage and adult children attend regular service projects, as well as quarterly board meetings where we make decisions as a family on what type of work we want to engage in,” she explains. This inclusive approach ensures that the foundation’s work is a shared family endeavor, fostering a sense of unity and purpose.
People First: Andrea’s Advice and Motivation
Andrea’s advice for aspiring leaders in the nonprofit sector is to prioritize people first. “The impact of the relationships you build over time, both with the nonprofit leaders and the people whose lives are impacted by your philanthropy, is the most meaningful part of our work,” she emphasizes.
The work in the nonprofit sector is never finished, and this motivates Andrea to continue pushing boundaries. “Everywhere you turn, you are being introduced to a compelling story, an organization that is doing amazing work,” she exclaims. The responsibility to show up for others and expand their impact drives her to strive for excellence every day.
Conclusion
Andrea Earl Clarke’s journey with The Labor and Honor Foundation is a powerful example of how vision, dedication, and a commitment to making a difference can transform lives. Her leadership, grounded in personal values and a relentless pursuit of knowledge, continues to inspire and create meaningful change. As we look to the future, leaders like Andrea remind us of the profound impact that dedicated individuals can have on our world.
