Vas’s career is a testament to growth, courage, and the power of reinvention. The first chapter of her journey was defined by a thriving global corporate career in HR, culminating in her role as CHRO of a Fortune 500 company in 2018. A natural risk-taker with an entrepreneurial spirit, Vas has embraced a bold new chapter as the Founder and CEO of Vas Nair Leadership Consulting and Co-founder of Giraffe, an innovative HR app she created with her sister Sobha Nair. This leap into entrepreneurship reflects her belief in the transformative potential of taking strategic risks.
In her second chapter, Vas is committed to helping organizations unlock the full potential of their people. Through her learning and capability-building programs, she empowers leaders with practical solutions to navigate their organizational and personal transformational journeys. “This is what I’m truly passionate about!” she shares. Her work with the Giraffe app is equally impactful, as it provides a dynamic toolkit for navigating challenges in the ever-changing world of work.
“I believe these two facets of my professional journey complement each other and can significantly bolster the future of HR and leadership,” Vas explains. She sees this stage of her career as an opportunity to give back and pay it forward.
Success Through Her Lens
For Vas, success isn’t simply about achievements – it’s about purpose, fulfillment, and making a difference in the lives of people she works with. While her journey has been marked by many meaningful accomplishments, it has also included its share of setbacks. Yet, through it all, her definition of success remains rooted in creating impact and finding gratification and pride in helping others.
Mentorship holds a special place in Vas’s heart. Whether guiding someone she knows well or supporting a new connection who says, “I need some help,” she finds immense satisfaction in supporting others to problem solve and progress. To her, success is as simple as “propping someone else up,” even if it’s through a small piece of advice or sharing her own lessons learned. Her humility and passion for giving back exemplify the true essence of success – one that leaves a lasting, positive ripple in the lives of others. This was at the heart of Vas’s contribution as a Board Member for the American Red Cross (New Jersey Chapter) for ten years.
From Banking to HR to Entrepreneurship: A Journey of Growth and Purpose
After earning her first degree in Sydney, Australia, Vas began her career at a major bank, where her dedication and exceptional performance quickly earned her a promotion to bank manager. It was in this role that she discovered her passion for the human side of work – onboarding new hires, improving customer service capabilities, and guiding colleagues through challenging interactions. “The people element of my role was what I truly enjoyed and fell into comfortably,” she recalls.
To focus on a new career pathway, Vas decided to pursue her HR calling elsewhere. She joined another financial services firm – where she was given her first opportunity in HR.
“The person who interviewed me for my first HR job remains one of my closest friends. We often reminisce about how that opportunity changed my life, giving me exposure to HR and solidifying my passion for it,” she says.
A move to the pharmaceutical industry gave Vas opportunities in the Asia Pacific region, which strengthened her foundation to pursue global roles. In 2002, she moved to the U.S. to lead global talent management programs. However, just two months later, the company was acquired. Vas recalls the difficulties of trying to create a new life in a new country without a stable plan. Undeterred, she embraced assignments with the acquiring company, and used the opportunity to build a new network and hone her operational, HR, and project management skills.
Vas’s persistence and expertise soon led her to her first Vice President role less than two years after relocating to the U.S. Here she expanded her passion for talent development, succession planning, and leading turnaround initiatives. Over the years, she led global HR teams across multiple industries, discovering along the way the impact of putting people at the heart of organizational success. “Each chapter has taught me to deeply value the ‘human’ aspect of organizations,” she shares. “Any initial doubts I had about my career choice soon disappeared. I found a strong sense of belonging in the world of HR.”
Upon reaching her CHRO milestone, Vas decided to explore her passion for creativity and established an interior design business. During this time, she designed and launched a series of mirror art. “I thoroughly enjoyed being the architect of those pieces,” she adds. However, the COVID-19 pandemic upended her plans. “The complexities introduced by COVID in 2020 led me back to my HR expertise,” she reflects. This pivot resulted in the launch of Vas Nair Leadership Consulting, which tied into her desire to build talent capabilities and help leaders in their transformational efforts. During this time, she collaborated with her sister to co-create the Giraffe app.
Today, Vas thrives in her role as an entrepreneur and mentor. “Sometimes I wish I’d started this earlier in my career,” she admits, but quickly adds, “However, I wouldn’t love what I do today if I hadn’t gone through the experiences I’ve had.” Her corporate career gave her a solid foundation – a platform enriched by diverse projects, strong leadership experiences, business acumen, global connections, and travel.

Unpacking the Giraffe App
The Giraffe app is a game-changer for HR professionals and individuals alike, designed to tackle workplace challenges and create a culture of collaboration and learning. “As an HR leader herself, my sister Sobha is highly in tune with these challenges and opportunities,” says Vas.
Recognizing the constant demands placed on HR professionals – whether it’s the impromptu “I need help” drop-ins or workforce upskilling – Vas and Sobha decided to create a tool that would facilitate clarity and offer faster problem-solving at one’s fingertips. “Developing the app was an exciting first for us,” Vas shares. “With each milestone we reached, our belief in Giraffe’s ability to equip people with the tools to face tough challenges grew stronger.”
With this app, users can navigate situations with confidence and ease, whether they’re resolving conflicts, preparing for a crucial conversation, or expressing interest in development opportunities. “Our app helps individuals customize a plan of action to tackle challenging scenarios and share feedback,” Vas explains. Central to the app’s functionality are microlearning tools and a robust data bank of over 650 tailored questions to customize one’s plan of action. Depending on the user’s needs, the app selects the most relevant questions to guide them, so that they feel prepared to tackle the scenario. “The Giraffe app helps accelerate empowerment and confidence, one person at a time,” she adds.
The name “Giraffe” carries a meaningful story. During a trip to South Africa, Vas and Sobha were enamored by these graceful giants. Just as a giraffe’s unique spot patterns are as individual as fingerprints, Vas emphasizes that no two workplace scenarios are alike. “Two people might face workplace conflict, but their circumstances, history, and goals will be distinct,” she says. The app reflects this understanding by offering guided steps and resources to personalize the solution for every user.
Additionally, the name symbolizes perspective. “Like giraffes, with their towering vantage points, the app encourages users to step back and view their situations from a higher-level perspective,” Vas shares.
A Storied Journey of Accomplishments
Vas’s journey is marked by several milestones. Among her many achievements, her first Vice President role holds a special place. “I wasn’t altogether prepared for it, but I had to rise to the occasion to support the people who trusted me,” she shares. “That role set the foundation for the next phases of my HR career, and from there, I moved on to larger global opportunities.”
Her extensive corporate experience is another source of pride, but it was her decision to venture into entrepreneurship that truly stands out. Vas considers the decision to start her own consultancy a defining moment of her career.
Reflecting on her younger self, Vas is sometimes struck by the transformation. “If someone had told me as a teenager that I would be a risk taker, I wouldn’t have believed them,” she says. Back then, she was quiet, cautious, and an introvert. Yet, every chapter of her career and life has been a testament to embracing risks and figuring things out along the way. “My mother has been an inspirational guide throughout my life. From her, I learned the true power of resilience, adaptability, and courage in the face of adversity,” Vas adds.
CEO Duties: Juggling Vision, Relationships, and Everything in Between
As CEO, Vas recognizes the importance of evolving her business model to incorporate the continuous changes thrown at business leaders. The world of work, specifically when it comes to leadership, requires dedication, agility, and emotional intelligence to successfully drive meaningful change – whether it is restructuring the organization, advances in technology, or incorporating customer trends, states Vas.
As a thought partner, she facilitates conversations with her clients to uncover challenges, craft pragmatic solutions, and celebrate success stories. She says, “This requires wearing different hats, for example, being a listener, advocate, mentor, or disruptor.”
A strong believer in continuous improvement, Vas establishes feedback loops that refine the solutions in real time and set the stage for future success. Her hands-on approach includes targeted client conversations to enable customized strategies – allowing her to remain attuned to shifts in both the business landscape and organizational culture. “Being adaptable and proactive ensures that the solutions I create not only address immediate needs but also position my clients for long-term growth,” she explains.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Vas values balance and intentional living. She coordinates her personal and professional goals through reflection, assessment, and prioritization. “Over time, I’ve discovered the habits and relationships that bring me clarity, peace and happiness,” she shares. Protecting time for family and close friends is essential for her well-being. “Spending quality time with loved ones grounds me and helps me recharge,” she says.
Vas has also embraced the power of protecting her ‘quiet time’ and setting boundaries. “I’ve learned to say ‘no’ when needed. Trying to be everything to everyone is not only draining but unfulfilling,” she says. “I’d rather be fully present and authentic with the people who truly matter and whose lives I can positively impact.”
A Pep Talk to Aspiring HR Leaders
Vas encourages aspiring HR leaders to focus on building capability and credibility, not just as a means to earn the trust and respect of employees and leaders, but as a foundation for becoming indispensable contributors to organizational success. She urges them to lead with integrity and authenticity, knowing that fairness, transparency, and ethical behavior set the tone for others to follow.
She also invites them to deepen their business acumen. “To lead effectively, you must combine your HR expertise with a solid understanding of how the business operates – warts and all,” she explains. “This combination not only strengthens your confidence but ensures your voice is heard where it matters most.”
As the HR field is ever evolving, Vas reminds aspiring leaders to be prepared to pivot strategies and embrace innovation, and challenge outdated practices to remain competitive. Yet, amidst the rapid changes, she emphasizes the importance of being an advocate for employees. “Your role is to be their ally and voice of reason,” she says.
Chapters Still Being Written
For Vas, the journey is far from over. She believes more exciting adventures are yet to come. “The road ahead continues to evolve and there are countless opportunities to uncover,” she shares with a smile. Her vision is to reimagine the way people work – creating environments that are both impactful and deeply fulfilling.
“I want to be remembered as someone who inspired others to rethink how we work and lead,” she says. “Let’s shape a future where we take pride in what we build, elevate one another, and leave behind a legacy of better ways to lead, collaborate, and thrive.”
